I had a great Education Sub-Committee meeting at Dulles Area Association of Realtors (Official) yesterday with 3 bright people in the business. As a lot of you know, I started in this business in 1983 and have seen a a lot of changes over the decades. I have a lot of passions, one of which is educating the public on the difference between a "Licensed Agent" vs. a REALTOR® . NAR did such a great job branding that most people think the two are the same. A REALTOR® is held to a much higher standard than a real estate licensee, mainly 17 Articles and Standards of Practice of the Code of Ethics. Whereas a non-REALTOR® would be only subject to whatever State Laws and the real estate rules and regulations of the local real estate commission, or its' equivalent.
I am by no means suggesting that a non-REALTOR® is less ethical nor sub-par to a REALTOR®, I am however stating a fact, we, REALTORS® are held to a higher standard. I personally know agents who are not REALTORS® nor should they have a need to be. One sells land in a subdivision, another sells time shares, etc. So the intent is not to minimize nor insult anyone who is not a REALTOR®, the intent is to educate the public about the difference.
More to come on this subject but I truly believe most buyers and sellers think anyone with a real estate license is a REALTOR®. It is our job to educate them. How you ask? That's part II at a later date. #cbproud #ethics
